Irrigation Permit
An irrigation system requires a permit and meter from the Town of Cary's Inspections and Permits Department. All work must comply with the NC State Plumbing Code and Town of Cary Standard Specifications and Details. If any part of the irrigation system encroaches on the Town's right-of-way - the 10' land area from the curb into the property or Town easement - the property owner must apply for an encroachment agreement.
The permit application must list the service location and billing address. Plumbing contractors must be licensed by the State, have a valid Town of Cary privilege license, and be listed on the permit application. Property owners may act as their own plumbing contractor should they choose to perform all associated work themselves.
A rain sensor is required on all irrigation systems. No permit is required to install the rain sensor.
The Permit application is submitted to the Town of Cary's Inspections and Permits Department along with:
1. Plan or drawing showing the following:
- Street name(s)
- Location of existing meter
- Location of all sprinkler heads
- Location of the reduced pressure zone valve/back flow preventer (RPZ)
2. Encroachment Agreement where applicable
3. Fees for residential irrigation meter
If any part of the irrigation system encroaches on a State road, the property owner must also obtain an Encroachment Agreement from the N.C. Department of Transportation.
