Beat the Peak

Beat the Peak 2011

Beat the Peak2011
Primarily due to the dramatic increase in irrigation, water consumption during the summer reaches peak demands. In our continuing commitment to preserve and protect our natural resources as well as reduce costs of infrastructure expansion, we encourage you to "Guard Against Water Waste".

Don't drown the ground! Play our interactive game and help our backyard water guard save the ladybugs.

Here are some of the many ways that you can be water efficient and achieve great results in the yard.

Guard Against Water Waste:

  • Let the rain do the work for you!  Always check the forecast for rain before watering your lawn.  Irrigate less, if at all, if rain is in the forecast.
  • Rain gaugeUse a rain gauge to track weekly rainfall and let the rain naturally irrigate your landscape.  Call us at (919) 469-4090 to request your free rain gauge today!
  • If you decide to water your landscape, only water when necessary, no more than 1 inch per week including rainfall, and according to the Alternate Day Watering Schedule:

    Even addresses: Wed, Fri, Sun
    Odd addresses: Tues, Thurs, Sat
Drip irrigation and handwatering allowed any day of the week

  • Irrigate in the early morning or late evening hours to reduce water loss from evaporation.

  • Protect against water waste by positioning sprinklers and irrigation heads to water your lawn and not paved surfaces such as streets and driveways. Our year-round Water Waste Ordinance prohibits overwatering your landscape by directly watering such impervious surface to the extent that water leaves the property; as well as overwatering to the extent that it causes run off.

  • Repair water leaks. Our Water Waste Ordinance also prohibits the flagrant waste of water through unrepaired leaks and unattended hoses.
  • Build up 1-3 inches of mulch in natural areas to retain moisture and discourage thirsty weeds.

WaterWise Incentives :

  • Minimize turf area and expand or create natural areas to reduce your need to irrigate. Find out if you’re eligible for a one-time, $500 incentive to help you achieve this goal.

Rain barrel

  • Use a rain barrel to harvest the rain and irrigate naturally. Rainwater harvesting is not subject to Cary's year-round outdoor watering restrictions. One inch of rain on a 1,000 square feet roof area equals about 625 gallons of water.
  • Actively participate in preserving and protecting our natural resources. Join local experts at our WaterWise Workshops to learn more.

Your Support of Our Watering Ordinances Helps us Beat the Peak:

  1. Alternate Day Watering (ADW) ordinance
  2. Water Waste ordinance
  3. Rain Sensor ordinance

Please note, that while residents are permitted to water three days a week according to the Alternate Day Watering ordinance, a healthy landscape may not require irrigating on all three days.
