Water Conservation
Overview
Water conservation in Cary is more than a "feel good" endeavor. The Town's comprehensive program provides solutions for maximizing use of a crucial natural resource.
Demand for water during the hottest, driest days can be more than twice the daily average. Reducing this spike in usage lengthens the time before costly treatment plant expansion is required.

Voluntary Measures, Incentives & Regulations
The water conservation program was established in 1996 to efficiently manage Cary's water resources and to decrease reliance on outside sources. In 2007, consultants completed Cary's Integrated Water Resources Management Plan (IWRMP). The study developed a water use profile of the Town's current customers, developed water demand projections, evaluated the effectiveness of the existing water conservation program, evaluated options for the expansion of the Town's reclaimed water system, and recommended a water resources management alternative that incorporates conservation and reuse elements.
Elements of the recommend water conservation plan include:
- Expanding public education programs such as the Beat the Peak campaign, school lessons, and the Block Leader program
- Continued enforcement of the Alternate Day Watering Ordinance, Water Waste Ordinance, and Rain Sensor Ordinance
- Continued refinement of the tiered rate structure thresholds.
The IWRMP also encouraged the continued evaluation and implementation of new water conservation incentives such as the rebates for high efficiency toilets that were initiated in 2008.
