The Public Works and Utilities Department has a wide range of responsibilities, including water and wastewater system operations, solid waste collection, recycling, conservation programs, and maintenance of Town streets, parks, buildings and vehicles.

The customer service staff handles calls on weekdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. During severe weather such as ice storms or hurricanes, crews are on duty around-the-clock.

• Sewer backups,
• Water leaks,
• Grease spills,
• Pothole repair,
• Dead animal collection,
• Water meter installation, and
• Other requests for service.

Other services include curbside collection of garbage, recylable materials, yard waste and leaves.

The Operations Center for Public Works and Utilities is at 400 James Jackson Ave. between Northwest Maynard Road and Cary Parkway. The staff offers tours for school groups and people of all ages between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays. Those scheduling tours should try to call a couple of weeks in advance.
