May 6 – Polka Plus Band (Yankovic Day)
2011 will be the 16th annual concert in which the Polka Plus Band salutes the music of the late Frankie Yankovic. Mr. Yankovic performed with the band in 1997 and passed away the following year. It is in the spirit of keeping his music alive for younger generations that Polka Plus Band continues to honor Frankie Yankovic.
Please note: In the event of inclement weather, this concert will not be rescheduled.
May 27 – Blue Voyage
Blue Voyage is a vibrant Turkish music group performing contemporary and traditional sounds of various regions of Turkey. The musicians in the group each have diverse experience and styles. They blend the dynamic sounds of different instruments; baglama, guitar, kemence, accordion, flute, doumbek and davul.
June 3 – Jamrock
Roots and reggae music. Jamrock is a regular at the Starlight Concert Series.
June 17 – Moment’s Notice
Drift away to an eclectic mix of high-energy jazz with Bobby Moody and friends! Moment’s Notice is another regular at the Starlight Concert Series.
July 1 – The Shady Grove Band
Since 1981, the Shady Grove Band has been performing bluegrass across the United States, Canada and Western Europe. They play a mix of traditional and new bluegrass. As a bonus, this concert will feature young musicians from the Town of Cary’s bluegrass summer camp.
July 8 – Mozart by Moonlight
Imagine a summer evening in Vienna, as a young Amadeus Mozart steps up to the podium to conduct a serenade for winds that he has just written. Recreate that experience under the stars at the Page-Walker garden, as members and friends of the Triangle Wind Ensemble present a concert of woodwind octets written by the young genius.
July 15 – Craicdown
Combining a technical mastery of their instruments with a passion for their playing, Craicdown performs acoustic roots music with a high-energy, rock inspired flare. The band’s repertoire draws from many sources, including the jigs and reels of the Celtic cultures, Brazilian choros, the swing musettes of Paris, American roots, and original compositions.
August 5 – Mickey Mills & Tropic Orchestra
The last concert in this year’s series will feature two acts. Trinidad native and Carrboro resident Mickey Mills has pounded out Caribbean sounds on his 55-gallon steel drum around the Triangle, opening up for acts like Kenny Chesney. His smooth reggae and positive lyrics make for a rousing family-oriented listening experience. Tropic Orchestra is a Latin dance band comprised of veteran musicians from the United States, Puerto Rico, Colombia and Venezuala. Frontman Ricardo Diquez, known as “TNT”, will end the series with a high-tempo Latin bang!
