Be Aware, Not Scared

Copperhead snake activity heats up as the warmer weather approaches this summer. Neighborhoods, greenways, parks, ball field and playground edges, and suburbia, in general, are prime places for copperhead encounters throughout the summer and the fall. Wear shoes when walking outside around your house after dark and use a flashlight. Bites aren’t typically fatal, but they sure hurt! Remember, when you encounter a copperhead, don’t aggravate it; just move around it. Never attempt to pick it up. You can’t get bitten if you don’t get close. If you are bitten, seek medical attention immediately. For more information about snakes and other local wildlife, check out our programs and activities for all ages!
