Why are only some residential projects eligible for online permits?

The North Carolina State Building Code does not require a plan review on the eligible residential projects. The Code does require plan review on other residential projects and all nonresidential/commercial projects. As a result, those projects still have to go through the traditional application process.

If I apply for a permit online, how long does it take to get my permit?

  • Applications submitted by 8 a.m. are processed the same business day.
  • Applications submitted after 8 a.m. will be processed the next business day.

After you submit an application you will receive an automated response, confirming that your application was successfully submitted, along with your application number. You may now use that number to track the application’s progress. Once the application has been approved and the permit issued, you will receive a second e-mail with the permit and guidelines for scheduling inspections.

What is a Master Account? Do I need one to use Building Permits Online?

A Master Account is a feature that allows contractors to view and manage all of their permits from one place. No, you do not need a Master Account to use Building Permits Online! Anyone may apply for permits and schedule inspections without a Master Account.

What if it shows the wrong property owner when I try to apply for an online permit?

That’s OK; please continue with your application. We always verify and correct the owner information before issuing any permits. However, if you notice that the current owner is not listed in our database, please let us know in the “Notes” section of the online application.

What if I don’t have a computer?

An accessible computer kiosk is available during normal business hours at the Inspections & Permits counter at Town Hall for customers without a computer with Internet access. It is available at no additional cost.

What is my permit number?

Your permit number is assigned during the application process and can be found on the paperwork you receive. It is also referred to as “application number”.

How do I schedule an inspection online?

Step 1: You will need the following information to schedule an inspection:

  • Permit number - located on the top right of the application (Note: “permit” number = “application” number)
  • Application PIN number - located on the permit document (A master account is not required; The “Forgot PIN” menu item is the Master Account PIN, not the application PIN required to schedule)
  • Type of inspection to be scheduled

Step 2: From the BP Online menu, select “Schedule/Cancel Inspections”, enter the permit/application number, and select Submit

Step 3: Select “Schedule an Inspection”

Step 4: Choose the permit for which you need the inspection

Step 5: Enter the PIN from the permit document and select Submit

Step 6: Choose an inspection from the list or select one of the other options to see more inspection choices

Step 7: Select the inspection you want and then choose from the list of available dates

For more information about scheduling inspections, please contact the Scheduling office at (919) 469-4046.

What if I don’t have the PIN number?

The application PIN is required to schedule inspections online, and is found on the documents you received with your permit—not the yellow inspection card, if you received one. Please contact the general contractor or primary contractor on the project to obtain the application PIN. You may also contact Customer Service at (919) 469-4046.

The application PIN is different from the Master Account PIN. The online menu button “Forgot PIN” is for help with Master Account PIN numbers, not application PIN numbers.

Why won’t it let me schedule an inspection?

There are a number of reasons that you might not be able to schedule an inspection online. Some of the more common reasons are:

  • Final inspections cannot be scheduled online
  • Some fees will prevent inspection scheduling. Go to “View Application Fees” to review and/or pay any outstanding fees.
  • A project modification has been submitted and is still in plan review
  • Permit has not been issued yet, or is on hold.

Contact the Scheduling office at (919) 469-4046 for more help with scheduling inspections.

Can I cancel an inspection online?

No, inspections can only be canceled by calling the Scheduling office at (919) 469-4046.

How can I find out who my inspector is the day of the inspection?

On the morning of your scheduled inspection, you may call (919) 469-4341 between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. to get the name and phone number of your inspector.  Then, simply call the inspector directly to find out when he or she expects to arrive.  While we make every effort to accommodate everyone's busy schedules, we cannot guarantee specific times for inspections.  Actual arrival times vary, depending upon work load and locations.  You can also check online who is assigned to your inspection.
