Downtown Roundabouts
Overview
This project will improve roadway geometry, safety, and aesthetics at two key intersections in Downtown Cary – East Chatham Street at East Durham Road and West Chatham Street at Old Apex Road. At both intersections, the Town will construct single-lane roundabouts to help move traffic more efficiently and provide a gateway to downtown Cary.
The roundabouts were originally envisioned in the Downtown Streetscape Plan, adopted by Cary Town Council in 2006. While the Streetscape Plan was placed on hold in 2009, the Town secured a grant in 2011 to construct the roundabouts as intersection improvements. The design is primarily roadway in nature but will contain some basic landscaping and aesthetic elements. The roundabouts are not being constructed with all the design features and artistic elements included in the Streetscape plans.
The project will include construction of the two roundabouts including central islands, crosswalks, splitter islands, and sidewalks. Downtown welcome signage are expected to the placed in the central islands. Access to businesses near the roundabouts will be maintained throughout the construction process. Traffic detours will route traffic around the construction areas while the roundabouts are being built, but the detours will be minimal and allow for a shorter construction period.
The two locations are highlighted on this map. The project originally included a third roundabout at Kildaire Farm Road and Walnut Street but it was removed based on costs, environmental, and operational issues.
Project Schedule
Design: Underway
Final Design: Winter 2011
Begin Easement Acquisition: Fall 2011
End Easement Acquisition: Winter 2011/2012
Construction Timeframe (anticipated): Spring / summer 2012
