LED Street Light Project
Fall 2010
The Town of Cary is committed to preserving and protecting our environment and has secured Department of Energy EECBG (Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block Grant) funding for several projects, including $35,000 for evaluation LED Street Lighting.
To implement this evaluation, the Town has partnered with Progress Energy and created a pilot project to install domestically produced LED street lighting options that will allow the Town to evaluate LED street lights in a variety of settings.
- The program includes the Town purchasing 34 LED fixtures from manufactures approved by Progress Energy and installation of the fixtures on Progress Energy owned poles.
- This program will establish baseline information to evaluate and potentially implement new street lighting initiatives that are more energy efficient. Both Town staff and the public can observe and comment on this lighting alternative. Basis of comparison will include public comment, quality of light, cost, maintenance and reduction of CO2 equivalents.
Locations for installation of LED streetlights under this project were selected based on condition of existing infrastructure, public request and visibility and include removal and replacement of aging street light infrastructure, retrofitting existing street light infrastructure and new installations.
