Citizens to Shred En Masse in Cary in Celebration of American Recycles Day
Volunteers encouraged to help with event

CARY, NC – In celebration of America Recycles Day, the Town of Cary is hosting the third annual Paper Shred Event on Saturday, November 17, at the Garmon Operations Center, 400 James Jackson Avenue from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Cary citizens may bring up to three boxes of paper for free and secure on-site shredding; bagged pre-shredded paper will also be accepted. Citizens who cannot make the event are reminded that as of October 1, the Town of Cary now accepts shredded paper as part of its curbside recycling program. To ensure proper collection, shredded paper must be in a clear plastic bag that is secured shut. When prepared the same way, shredded paper is also accepted at the Citizens Convenience Center at 313 N. Dixon Avenue.

“Thanks to our strong culture of conservation, we’ve seen our America Recycles Day event attract more and more shredded paper each year,” said Bob Holden, Solid Waste & Recycling Manager. “Citizens who don’t have paper to contribute are urged to volunteer the day of the event to help others as they strive to be green.” Those interested in volunteering should call (919) 469-4301; volunteers must be at least 15 years old and will be tasked with unloading shredded paper boxes from vehicles and managing overall traffic flow.

Since 1997, communities across the country have come together each November to celebrate America Recycles Day, the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling programs in the United States. Last year’s America Recycles Day shredding event in Cary collected over 14,000 pounds of paper from nearly 500 citizens.

The Cary Recycles program includes all Town of Cary solid waste customers and individually owned multi-family complexes; an estimated 75% of citizens participate in the Town’s curbside recycling program annually. Last year alone, the Town collected nearly 28,000 tons of recyclable waste, diverting 47.6 percent of its overall solid waste collection from the landfill.
