Traffic Alert- Flashing Yellow Arrow Signal Lights Installation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 26, 2010

TRAFFIC ALERT
Flashing Yellow Arrow Signal Lights to be Installed Along Kildaire Farm Road

Beginning April 28, 2010, the Town of Cary will install flashing yellow arrow signal lights at five intersections along Kildaire Farm Road:

•   Kilmayne Drive
•   Farmington Woods Drive/ Wrenn Drive
•   High Meadow Drive
•   Shannon Oaks Circle
•   Penny Road

It should be noted that one location will use a three-section flashing yellow arrow: southbound left-turns on Kildaire Farm Rd at Kilmayne Drive. This signal arrangement will provide three vertical lights for motorists making a left turn: a solid red arrow, a solid yellow arrow and a flashing yellow arrow. There will not be a protected green left-turn arrow like the current four-section flashing yellow arrow signals. Motorists turning left on a flashing yellow arrow must first yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

The five new locations will work with the two current installations to improve safety and signal timing coordination along the corridor. Motorists should expect minor delays during installation, including periodic closings of left-turn lanes. The work will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and will be completed by May 5, 2010. Direct costs for the project will be handled by NCDOT; Town staff will be responsible for installation and programming, both of which result in no additional cost for the Town of Cary.

The flashing yellow arrow signal heads that will be added to the five locations above will be the same as the previous installations located at five other locations throughout Town. The five new locations will operate in the same manner with red arrows meaning no left-turn movements shall be made, a yellow solid arrow meaning the left-turn phase is about to end, the flashing yellow meaning a left-turn vehicle may make a left-turn if a sufficient gap in traffic is present, and a green arrow meaning the left-turn vehicles have the exclusive right-of-way to turn left.

Flashing yellow arrows can increase safety of left-turn movements at intersections and improve traffic flow. For more, visit Traffic Signals at www.townofcary.org or NCHRP 3-54 Web site on flashing yellow arrows.
