Clean-Up Complete in Cary Sewer Spill

CARY, NC— A sewer overflow near the 1100 block of Buck Jones Road in Cary resulted in an approximately 87,528 gallon spill on June 22, 2010. Officials believe that vandals broke the lock on the manhole and inserted a 5-gallon bucket into the line to block the flow. The untreated waste spilled from the manhole and reached Walnut Creek; three dead minnows were found.  Crews used about 618,800 gallons of dechlorinated water to flush Walnut Creek; last night’s rain helped accelerate the clean-up and dilute impacts to the creek.

Cary Crime Stoppers pays up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification and apprehension of the individual(s) responsible for this crime.  Anyone with information may contact Crime Stoppers at 226-CRIME (226-2746); for Cary Police (press 3 at the prompt) or call 462-2002.  All calls are kept confidential at the caller’s request..

The Clean Water Act requires public notice in the form of a news release issued by public works operators within 48 hours of the detection of a wastewater overflow of 1,000 gallons or greater that also reaches surface waters.  Paid advertisements are also necessary for spills in excess of 14,999 gallons.
