Cary Citizens Urged to Join Country in Celebrating National Parks and Recreation Month
CARY, NC – At its regular meeting on July 15, the Cary Town Council officially recognized Parks and Recreation month, which runs the whole month of July. As part of the observance, communities across the nation celebrate with special recreational activities that remind local decision makers and citizens of the exciting and vital role that parks and recreation play in the lives of Americans. For Cary, National Parks and Recreation month is all about the opportunity of numbers: over 50 miles of greenways and trails, 28 parks and natural areas, three major sports venues and dozens of unique summer camps, classes, concerts and cultural arts programs ready and waiting to be explored and enjoyed.
“Our exceptional recreation facilities and cost-effective programs give citizens the opportunity to get out every day and experience the positive health effects, social interaction and connection to nature that come with vibrant and supported parks and recreation,” said Assistant Town Manager Mike Bajorek. Bajorek, who is also serving as the Town’s interim director for the Town’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department, added that the Cary recreation facilities and their programs bring in over $14 million in revenue annually.
Upcoming events include the PONY National League Tournament and Lazy Daze, the southeast’s premier arts and crafts festival. The NC Symphony’s Summerfest Series will wrap-up at the end of the month, while Movies by Moonlight and the Starlight Concert Series will continue through August.
The Town of Cary’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department was the first nationally accredited department of its kind in the Triangle. In addition to being one of only six communities nationwide to be named an NCAA Championship City, the Town of Cary is proud to have been designated a Fit Community.
Since 1985, America has celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation Month. Each July, the National Recreation and Parks Associate encourages recreation facilities and parks across the country to kick-off summer programs, promote outdoor physical recreation and pull together volunteers to make their outdoor space a thriving center of community activity.
