Crime Alert- Motor Vehicle Larcenies in North Cary area

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 2, 2010

– CRIME ALERT –

CARY, NC – The Town of Cary is seeking your help in reducing the number of larcenies from motor vehicles at area hotels. Over the last two months, there have been 30 motor vehicle break-ins at hotels in the North Cary area. These crimes can occur anytime, but mostly during the overnight hours. Items targeted have been those of value left in view of the public such as computer laptops, iPods and GPS units. The suspect entered the vehicles by smashing out windows to access the items.

“We encourage hotel operators to train their staff to remind customers at the time of check-in to consider removing any valuable items from their vehicle for their own safety,” said Captain Don Hamilton, District 1 Commander with the Town of Cary Police Department.

Most larceny from vehicles is preventable. To help prevent these sorts of crimes, the Town of Cary Police Department reminds citizens to:

• Avoid leaving valuables, including loose change and cash, in plain view.
• Park in well-lighted areas. Always roll up the windows and lock the car.
• Never leave GPS units/mounts visible when the vehicle is unattended.
• Remove after-market stereo equipment from the dash. This includes CD players/radios with removable “faces”.
• Immediately call 911 if confronted and provide a detailed description of the suspect.
• Remember to take quick actions in notifying the Cary Police Department to help increase the chances of apprehending the suspect and preventing future incidents.

For more crime prevention tips, see the Police Department section of www.townofcary.org or call (919) 469-4324.

Town of Cary Crime Alerts are intended to quickly raise public awareness of a potential or emerging crime issue so that citizens can take preventative action.  Crime Alerts are typically issued before substantial information or evidence exists to point to a particular suspect or warrant a full news release.
