Community Meeting Scheduled for Residents of The Grove at Cary Park
Town of Cary Police to share safety tips and statistics
CARY, NC – As investigations continue in the fatal shooting of Jibrael Menelik, the Town of Cary Police Department will host a community meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at The Grove at Cary Park, 4545 Cary Glen Boulevard. At the request of the property owner, this meeting is open to residents only; neighbors surrounding the community should call their Town of Cary District commanders to express any concerns or to request officers meet with their community.
At the meeting, residents will be introduced to their Town of Cary police district command team. District 2 Captain Kenny Williams and Criminal Investigations Captain Michael Williams will address resident concerns and share area safety statistics. Brian Austin, Cary’s Community Services Officer, will offer crime prevention tips. Investigators will be on-site to answer questions or to hear tips.
“The Town of Cary consistently ranks among the top safest cities in the country, and our goal with this community meeting is to assure residents that they are safe,” said Michael Williams, Criminal Investigations. “Any piece of information, no matter how small or unimportant it seems, can be vital to bringing this family closure. We encourage anyone who might know something about this case to step forward.”
In the early hours of Saturday, April 10, Town of Cary Police officers responded to a report of shots fired at Pony Club Circle in northwestern Cary. Upon arrival, officers found Apex resident Jibrael Menelik, 28, in the breezeway of the 700 building, shot but conscious. Menelik was transported to Duke University Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. This is Cary’s first murder since 2008.
The Town of Cary Police Department seeks any information linked to Saturday’s murder. Anyone near the area during the time of the murder is encouraged to contact the Town of Cary Police Department at (919) 469-4012 or can file reports anonymously with Cary Crime Stoppers at 226-CRIM(E). Crime Stoppers pays up to $2,500 for the arrest or indictment of those responsible for committing certain types of crimes. All calls will be kept CONFIDENTIAL at caller's request.
