After a Master Goes Missing, Town of Cary Fire Department Undertakes Lockbox Re-Keying Operation
March 12, 2010
CARY, NC – In an abundance of caution, Town of Cary Fire Department staff is removing building keys from 992 business lockboxes tonight after one of the department’s master keys to the exterior boxes was discovered missing. The lockboxes, commonly referred to as a Knox Box, hold keys that firefighters use to access the business during after-hour emergencies and calls for service. Fire personnel are taking the business keys to a secure location and contacting business owners to make arrangements to reunite them with their keys. In a parallel process, officials are arranging for each box to be re-keyed, a process that is expected to take several weeks.
“Although we strongly believe that the key is simply lost and not stolen, we wanted to take all necessary precautions to ensure that our community’s businesses are protected,” said Town of Cary Fire Chief Allan Cain. “We apologize for the inconvenience to our businesses and appreciate their support as we work as quickly as possible to resolve this situation.”
Business owners with questions or concerns should call the Fire Department at (919) 469-4056 or visit in person at 100 N. Academy Street. Officials will be available until 9 p.m. this evening and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
This is the first time in 24 years that one of the 20 master keys has been lost. Firefighters have been searching for it since Wednesday night.
