Cary Non-Profits Receive $30K from 2009 Lazy Daze Grant Awards

CARY, NC – Twenty-eight Cary-based non-profit groups received a total of $30,000 as part of the 2009 Lazy Daze Grant Awards from the Town of Cary during a reception held on January 28, 2010, at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center. Each year, the Town’s Lazy Daze Committee selects award recipients from a pool of applicants based on a project they would like to have funded. More than 38 groups applied for this year’s funding. Since the inception of the grant program in 1980, the Lazy Daze Committee has awarded over $470,000 to local non-profit organizations.

"Throughout Cary, there are dozens of cultural arts organizations that support overall Town of Cary initiatives," said Joy Ennis, Festival Coordinator with the Town of Cary. "Our grant program is an excellent way to reward those organizations that enrich the lives of our citizens throughout the year."

The following list details the winning groups and their project:

Asociacion Puertorriquenos Unidos de Carolina del Norte
Asociacion Puertorriquenos Unidos de Carolina del Norte will be using their Lazy Daze Grant to go toward general operating expenses associated with creating and promoting fun cultural events.

Cary - Apex Piano Teachers' Association
The Cary-Apex Piano Teachers Association will use the grant to sponsor its annual guest recital, and annual student master class.

Cary Ballet Company

Cary Ballet will use the Lazy Daze grant to fund its annual "Celebration of Children in the Arts" festival.

Cary Community Choir
The Lazy Daze grant to the Cary Community Choir is earmarked for their annual presentation of Handel’s Messiah, which, having taken place since 1971, is one of Cary’s oldest cultural arts events.

Cary Family YMCA
The Cary Family YMCA will use its grant to enhance the arts & craft component of Camp Y-Rageous - an eight week summer day camp free to children living in low-income communities.

Cary Photographic Artists
Cary Photographic Artists will use their grant to purchase equipment that will be used in free basic photography classes for people with moderate to severe mental disabilities.

Cary Players, Inc.

The Cary Players Lazy Daze grant will help underwrite the cost of their production of Love Bits and Bites 2010 to be held at Page-Walker Arts & History Center this month.

Cary Public Library

The Cary Public Library’s Laze Daze Grant will help to defray the costs of their author lecture series and their 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Cary Teen Council

Each year an outstanding graduating senior who has served the Cary Teen Council with distinction is awarded the Lazy Daze Scholarship. The Teen Council initiates, organizes, supervises and conducts programs to develop leadership qualities in its members – which are demonstrated each year at the Lazy Daze Festival through Teen Council Volunteer efforts.

Cary Town Band
The Cary Town Band will use its grant for various expenses of its 2010 concert schedule.

Cary Visual Art, Inc.

Cary Visual Art will use its grant to partially fund its Public Art in Focus Lecture Series at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center.

Concert Singers of Cary
The Concert Singers Cary’s grant will underwrite costs of all upcoming programs of theirs and the Cary Children’s Concert Choir.

Diamante, Inc.
Diamante, Inc. will be using their Lazy Daze grant money to sponsor a Latin night during the Twilight Concert Series held at Page-Walker that would coincide with the presentation of Ritmo Latino in August.

Fine Arts League of Cary

Fine Arts League of Cary will use the funds to pay for written and video material for 9 monthly programs as well as honorariums to encourage artists to develop and conduct programs.

Friends of Hemlock Bluffs

Friends of Hemlock Bluffs are planning to install new gates that incorporate art to showcase the bluffs and draw people in.

Friends of Page Walker

The Friends of Page-Walker plans to use their grant money for a project to better preserve and archive the many artifacts of Cary history that have been donated to them.

Hum Sub, Inc.

Hum Sub, Inc. will be using funds from their grant to bring the Indian festival of lights celebration, Diwali, as well as the spring festival, Basant Bahaar, free to the people of Cary.

Kids Together, Inc.
Kids Together, Inc will use the funds from the Lazy Daze Grant toward a new interactive water feature for the Kids Together Playground at Marla Dorrel Park.

Life Experiences, Inc.
Life Experiences will implement an arts and crafts program using the Lazy Daze grant money, they hope to help disabled adults explore their creative side as well as expose them to cultural activities they may not have been able to experience before such as going to a play or visiting the art museum.

MLK, Jr. Task Force of Cary

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Taskforce of Cary will use funds from the Lazy Daze grant will be used to support the events throughout the year commemorating Dr. King’s life.

NC Eid Festival, Inc
.
The NC Eid Festival, Inc will be using their Lazy Daze Grant to offer an opportunity for the community to learn a more about Muslim culture. This cultural festival will bring a Bazaar, food, music, arts and dance from all over the world to our corner of the Triangle.

NC Historical Enrichment Society

NC Historical Enrichment Society will be using their grant to improve their Environmental Theater program that trains actors to create an environment for patron interaction.

Philharmonic Association, Inc.

The Philharmonic Association grant will help off set the costs of sheet music, expenses for guest soloists, conductors and composers and rehearsal spaces.

Sister Cities Association
Sister Cities Association’s grant will fund celebrations centered around each of our Sister Cities for the coming year.

The Carying Place, Inc
.
At The Carying Place funds received from the Lazy Daze grant will go toward the Children’s Program where kids are given the chance to create and experience art in a way they may not be able to at home.

Triangle British Brass Band

Triangle Brass Band is planning three performances at Sertoma Amphitheater in Bond Park during June and July. The Lazy Daze Grant will help fund these concerts.

Triangle Wind Ensemble
Triangle Wind Ensemble grant funds will be going towards the costs of presenting renting rehearsal space and other standard expenses.

Western Wake Artists Studio Tour

Western Wake Artists Studio Tour will use funds from the Lazy Daze Grant to go towards promotion of the event and the kick off reception to be held at the Cary Chamber of Commerce this spring.

The 2010 Lazy Daze Arts & Crafts Festival will take place on August 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Downtown Cary.
