Cary Hires First Sustainability Manager
CARY, NC – Emily C. Barrett has been selected as the Town of Cary’s first Sustainability Manager. With both private and public sector experience, Barrett, 36, has been working in the environmental protection and sustainability arena for more than a decade. She was the top pick from a pool of 76 applicants from eight states as far away as Arizona, Florida and New Jersey. She and her family will relocate to Cary from Austin, Texas, where she most recently worked as an Environmental Program Specialist for Culture Technologies, Inc. Her first day in her new role is March 29, 2010.
“Cary is recognized throughout the nation as one of the best places to live, work, and raise a family, and I’m excited about the opportunity to join the Town’s outstanding staff, Council, and citizen volunteers in taking the next steps in continuing Cary’s record as a leading environmental steward,” said Barrett.
As Sustainability Manager, Barrett will coordinate the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the Town’s sustainability program, including organizing and coordinating environmental efforts as well as serving as staff liaison to the Environmental Advisory Board. An initial focus will be on implementing energy efficiency and conservation projects.
Barrett holds a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Alabama and a Masters degree in Air and Aquatic Science from the School of Public Health at UNC Chapel Hill. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and their two children. She’s also an avid baker.
