Music Unites Cary Children, Adults at Town's First Combined Choral Celebration

CARY, NC – After weeks of rehearsing, children who attend Cary-area Wake County Public Schools and private schools will join voices for a combined choral celebration. The free concert presented by the Town of Cary is scheduled for Saturday, April 10 at Cary High School at 5:30 p.m. It is a part of the Town’s “Cary Performs” program, an educational outreach and collaboration effort with schools to showcase the arts in Cary.

In February, Dr. Kenny Potter, director of Choral Activities and Music Education at Wingate University, and his wife, Dr. Heather Potter, associate director of the Charlotte Children’s Choir, gathered numerous middle school and high school choral teachers throughout Wake County for an educational workshop. Using the same pieces of music taught at the workshop, the Cary-area teachers then had six weeks to use similar techniques they learned to prepare their students for the upcoming choral concert.

“The successful collaboration between the schools and community organizations illustrates the importance of music throughout our lives,” said Sarah Preston, the Town of Cary’s Performing Arts Coordinator. “We hope to build on the interest of this pilot program and host a similar event next year in another arts discipline and rotate among the various disciplines every year.”

The First Combined Choral Celebration will feature approximately 60 middle school students and 60 high school students, plus the talents of the Children’s Concert Choir and the Concert Singers of Cary. Learn more about the performance at www.townofcary.org or call (919) 469-4601.
