At Camp Confidence, Cary Students, Police Grow Community Relations
CARY, NC – It might be too early to gather back-to-school supplies, but the Town of Cary School Resource Officers have come together to arm select area youth with the tools for a successful high school career. Camp Confidence, generously funded by the five Cary Area Rotary Clubs and the Cary Oil Foundation, is the first-ever mentor program by the Town of Cary Police Department designed to develop and encourage positive interactions between police officers and Cary youth while teaching valuable life skills in a fun, interactive environment.
Campers, who are rising seventh and eighth graders selected by Town of Cary Police Department School Resource Officers, will gather tonight at Green Hope Elementary School Park to meet their counselor. Camp Confidence will run weekdays from July 12-23 at various locations throughout Cary and will include lessons on internet safety, conflict-resolution activities and exposure to future career and college options. The camp culminates with a graduation ceremony at Cary Town Hall on July 23 at 6:30 p.m.
“The Town of Cary Police Department is fully committed to the health and well-being of our children, and our Camp Confidence is an opportunity for us to reach a segment of our population we may not be able to otherwise reach,” said Major Tony Godwin, Town of Cary Operations Bureau Commander. “Funded by the community, for the community, it is one more reflection of our citizens’ commitment to a safe and healthy Cary.”
In addition to monetary support, all five Cary Area Rotary Clubs and the Cary Oil Foundation have agreed to assist with lunches, providing transportation as needed and serving as guest speakers on success and careers. Both organizations were recognized for their generosity at the May 13, 2010 regular Cary Town Council meeting. The Town of Cary hopes to make the camp an annual event.
