Town of Cary Inspections & Permits Department Hosts Forum for Building Safety Month
Residents encouraged to learn how to make their home projects safe

CARY, NC – To help raise awareness of building safety in Cary and in recognition of Building Safety Month, the Town of Cary Inspections & Permits Department will host a building safety forum at Lowe’s Home Improvement, 1920 NW Maynard Road, on May 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the forum, Inspections & Permits staff will be onsite to answer questions on building safety, building codes, permitting and inspections; guests can also learn about the services the department offers and talk one-on-one with department employees. Brochures and takeaways will be available.

Building safety and fire prevention codes address all aspects of construction, such as structural soundness of buildings, electrical systems, reliability of fire prevention and suppression systems, plumbing and mechanical systems, and energy efficiency and sustainability. To ensure buildings are safe requires the active participation of building safety and fire prevention officials, architects, builders, engineers, and others in the construction industry, as well as property owners.

“Public safety is our number one concern, and during Building Safety Month we have the opportunity to emphasize the importance of inspecting and permitting according to State codes during construction,” said Russ Overton, Director of Inspections & Permits. “This event at Lowe’s helps us to achieve our goal by giving our building safety officials the chance to answer questions about building safety and permitting so that we can all live, learn, work and play in a safe environment.”

The event at Lowe’s follows the Town Council’s proclamation at its regular meeting on Thursday, May 13, officially recognizing Building Safety month, which runs for the whole month of May. As part of the observance, communities across the nation are promoting the use and understanding of building safety and fire prevention codes to protect lives and property.

Earlier this month, the Town of Cary expanded its educational efforts to Cary High School, where staff members presented building safety, building codes, permitting and inspection information to students in the school’s construction technology classes.

“Interacting with students who will be tomorrow’s builders and contractors is key to continuing the level of construction safety in Cary,” said Overton.

Building Safety Month is sponsored by the International Code Council, a membership organization dedicated to building safety and fire prevention, of which Cary is an active member.  The International Code Council develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. Most U.S. cities, counties and states choose the International Codes—building safety codes developed by the International Code Council.
