Town of Cary, NCDOT Project to Increase Safety on Kildaire Farm Road
4-mile section to be resurfaced, repaved and reconfigured to better include pedestrians and cyclists
CARY, NC – One of Cary’s main arteries is slated to get a major facelift this summer. Starting July 9, weather permitting, the N.C. Department of Transportation will begin rehabilitating a 4-mile section of Kildaire Farm Road from Walnut Street to Palace Green. In conjunction with resurfacing, milling and paving, the Town of Cary and NCDOT will work to reconfigure lane patterns between Maynard Road and Walnut Street, adjusting the existing four-lane section to a three-lane section with a center turn lane and extra width for cyclists. Weather permitting, all work will be completed by September 2010.
“We appreciate NCDOT’s efforts to improve this State road and look forward to the smoother ride, better traffic flow, and, most of all, the increased safety for pedestrians and cyclists,” said Bob Shultes, Town of Cary Engineer. Shultes noted that in Cary’s 2010 Biennial Citizen Satisfaction Survey, Kildaire Farm Road was one of several mostly state-owned roads that citizens wanted addressed
As part of the 2010 NCDOT Wake County Resurfacing Project, Rea Contracting hope to have all asphalt repairs, milling and resurfacing completed in Phase One by the end of August 2010, weather permitting. As part of Phase Two, the new traffic pattern, crosswalks with pedestrian signals and long life pavement markings will be implemented as the roadwork is completed but no later than Fall 2010. As stated in the project contract, lane closures may be installed anytime except Monday-Friday from 6-9 a.m. and 4-7 p.m. At least one lane in each direction will remain open at all times. Operations will mostly be underway at night but may also take place during the day, except during the times noted above. In the case of inclement weather, work will resume on the next business day.
The total cost of work on the State-maintained portions of Kildaire Farm Road from Palace Green to Byrum Street is approximately $933,400. The Town of Cary will pay $27,820 for NCDOT to complete work on the Town-maintained portions of Kildaire Farm Road that fall within the 4-mile stretch. It will be paid for from the Town’s annually funded street capital improvement budget.
Following completion of the NCDOT resurfacing project, the Town of Cary will implement Shared Use Arrow bicycle markings on Kildaire Farm Road from Walnut Street to Cary Parkway as part of the Town’s Bicycle Capital Improvements Project.
During construction, drivers are reminded to follow construction signs, stay alert and obey posted speed limits.
