Input Sought on Cary's Sign Regulations

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 5, 2010

Citizens encouraged to complete online survey

Cary, NC - The Town of Cary is looking for community input on signs in Cary; during the month of January, Cary residents, business owners, and visitors have an opportunity to let the Town know their thoughts regarding current sign regulations and suggest changes via an online survey, which is available at the Sign Ordinance Evaluation Task Force section of www.townofcary.org. A hard copy of the questionnaire is also available in the reception area of the Town of Cary Planning Department, 316 N. Academy St., 3rd Floor, through January 31, 2010.

“We hope to hear from as many people as possible as we work to ensure that Cary’s sign rules continue to reflect the community’s values and standards,” said Senior Planner Debra Grannan.

At its July 23, 2009 regular meeting, the Cary Town Council directed staff to initiate a comprehensive evaluation of Cary’s Sign Ordinance, paying particular attention to the effects of the present regulations considering the current economic condition. A Task Force representing both Cary citizens and business owners was appointed by the council on October 22, 2009 to conduct a comprehensive review of all of Cary’s sign regulations. It has been 10 years since the current regulations were implemented. The key objectives of the task force are to:

• Evaluate sign regulations for clarity, consistency and intent
• Review input from citizens and the business community
• Identify and discuss recent industry or economic trends that may impact signage
• Consider appropriate amendments in light of the evaluation findings

The task force’s recommendations will be presented to the Town Council in the spring of 2010. If ordinance amendments are suggested, a public hearing will be scheduled later in the process when new ordinance language is drafted.
