Cary’s A-Team Ready for Wintry Weather
With brining complete, Town crews stand ready to address slick spots if/as they develop
December 15, 2010
CARY, NC – With weather forecasters calling for the possibility of snow and sleet on Thursday, the Town of Cary’s A-Team is fully prepared to address icy patches, ramps and bridges as needed for the morning commute. Drivers should report icy conditions to (919) 469-4012. Town crews will use infrared thermometers to gauge road temperatures and help determine when sand/salt mixes need to be applied. The Town’s Snow Fighters have 2,300 tons of sand/salt mix on hand along with more than 650 tons of pure salt. There are approximately 55 pieces of winter weather-fighting equipment available to clear Cary’s 678 linear miles of streets, about 447 linear miles of which are within subdivisions.
“We’re monitoring the weather and although this event doesn’t look like it will bring any accumulation, we’re prepared to fight slick spots and keep our roads clear and safe,” said Scott Hecht, Town of Cary Public Works Director.
Should wintry weather materialize, Cary’s A-Team will treat and clear thoroughfares first followed by primary roads in subdivisions, then through-streets in subdivisions and then cul-de-sacs. The Town does not clear private parking lots, including those in apartment and condominium complexes or at businesses.
C-Tran fixed route and door-to-door transit services run on schedule for as long as doing so is considered safe. Riders are encouraged to call C-Tran directly at (919) 481-2020 for updates.
A decision regarding canceling Town parks, recreation, and cultural programs, classes, and sports activities will be made by 7 a.m. Participants should call the facility in which the program is being held for an update or (919) 469-4061.
During inclement weather:
• Do not park on streets so that plows and other Town equipment can service the area.
• Do not attempt to deal with downed limbs or trees on a street or sidewalk on your own as they may be tangled in live power lines; instead, call the Town at (919) 469-4012.
• Be neighborly. Check on neighbors to make sure that everyone is okay.
• Stay indoors during severe winter weather. If you do decide to venture out—whether walking or driving—let folks know when and where you are going so that they can contact emergency officials should you fail to reach your destination. Take a cell phone just in case.
