Town of Cary Announces 9/11 Remembrance Activities
CARY, NC – As the anniversary of the tragic 9/11 events approaches, the Town of Cary is asking citizens to participate in reflections on Saturday, September 11, 2010. Town facilities will lower their flags to half staff, and at 8:46 a.m., places of worship and businesses across Town are encouraged to toll their bells for one minute to mark the time of the first World Trade Center attack. Then, at 6:45 p.m., Town Council member and Sister Cities liaison Jack Smith with introduce Mayor Harold Weinbrecht at Koka Booth Amphitheatre for a musical tribute sponsored by Sister Cities International and Cary’s Sister Cities Commission. Larry Speakman, artistic director for the Concert Singers of Cary, will lead the audience in singing America the Beautiful. The regularly scheduled concert, Garrison Keillor%u2019s a Prairie Home Companion Summer Love Tour, will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. following the tribute.
“Almost a decade later, the events of September 11 are still felt worldwide, and it’s important that our community join the nation to celebrate the lives of those lost,” said Cary Mayor Harold Weinbrecht. “The musical tribute also gives us a chance to reflect on the international legacy of the Sister Cities movement and embrace its spirit of unity.”
Ironically, it was on September 11, 1956, that the Sister Cities movement emerged from a White House Summit on Citizen Diplomacy. At this summit, President Eisenhower called on Americans to practice people-to-people diplomacy in the name of peace.
The Town of Cary’s Sister Cities program began in 1992 with Le Touquet, France. Since then, the Town has built relationships with three additional Sister Cities including: Hsinchu City, Taiwan; Markham, Canada; and County Meath, Ireland.
