Heavy Rains Lead to Sewer Overflow in Cary

June 17, 2009

CARY, NC – Heavy rains contributed to a spill in excess of 15,000 gallons from a manhole in the 1100 block of Buck Jones Road on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, from 8 a.m. until 1:20 p.m.  The untreated waste reached Walnut Creek ; no fish-kill was observed.  The area around the manhole was cleaned for debris; due to the high creek flow, the creek could not be flushed. High water levels diluted the waste before it reached the creek.

The Clean Water Act requires a news release to be issued by public works operators within 48 hours of the detection of a wastewater overflow of 1,000 gallons or greater that also reaches surface waters.  Paid advertisements are also necessary for spills in excess of 14,999 gallons.
