JOHN DEE HOLEMAN BRINGS HIS GUITAR & BLUES TO CARY ’S SERTOMA AMPHITHEATRE THIS SATURDAY

Concert part of Cary ’s Spring Sertoma Series and the PineCone Concert Series

CARY , NC The Town of Cary is teaming up with PineCone, the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music, once again to present an afternoon of blues featuring John Dee Holeman on Saturday, June 20, 2009 , at 3 p.m. at the Sertoma Amphitheatre at Bond Park, 801 High House Road . The performance is part of the Town’s Annual Summer Sertoma Concert Series that features the Triangle’s best in free, live, outdoor entertainment.

Holeman was born in Orange County , North Carolina in 1929, and has been playing the blues since he was 14 years old. He credits Blind Boy Fuller as the man who taught him to play even though he never met Fuller personally.  He learned by listening to Fuller's records and by playing with musicians who had learned directly from Fuller.  Holeman uses both the Piedmont and Texas styles in his guitar playing.

Holeman was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship in 1988 and a North Carolina Folk Heritage Award in 1994. He is recently retired from being a heavy machine operator, and currently still tours at home and abroad. He has toured in the U.S. , Europe and Asia .

“Come out to Bond Park and enjoy the melodies of a blues legend in the great outdoors,” said Town of Cary Performing Arts Coordinator Sarah Bunch .

Everyone is also invited to attend the remaining Summer Sertoma concerts, including the Triangle Brass Band Concerts on June 27 and July 18.  Also, the Cary Town Band and Applause! Youth Theatre will perform as part of the Independence Day celebration on July 3.

PineCone was formed in 1984 to honor the traditional music heritage that makes North Carolina unique.  PineCone is a private, non-profit, charitable membership organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors who are Triangle citizens.  PineCone moved its free summer concert series from Lake Benson Park in Garner to the Sertoma Amphitheatre in Cary ’s Bond Park in March 2009.
