Cary Celebrates Independence Day with Patriotic Performances, Olde Time Festival

 Two days of entertainment planned for citizens of all ages

CARY, NC –The Town of Cary’s annual, two-day Fourth of July celebration will start with a song and end with a bang beginning Friday, July 3, 2009 with performances at Fred G. Bond Metro Park, 801 High House Road, on Friday and concluding with the sounds of the North Carolina Symphony and the Triangle's best fireworks on Saturday, July 4, 2009 at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre at Regency Park, 8003 Regency Parkway.  Celebration highlights include food, music, contests, games, and a “Parade in the Park”.

 

On Friday, July 3 at 6:15 p.m. at the Sertoma Amphitheatre, located in Fred G. Bond Metro Park, Applause! Cary Youth Theatre’s touring troupe will present “Faces of Freedom,” a funny and touching look at the lives of young immigrants to America who, despite their differences, are united in their search for freedom. Following the play, the Cary Town Band will take the stage to entertain the audience with patriotic favorites including marches, waltzes and light classical music.

 

Independence Day activities will continue at Fred G. Bond Metro Park at 8 a.m. and run until 3 p.m. at the Independence Day Olde Time Celebration on July 4.  Guests are invited to exercise their freedom of expression by decorating bikes, tricycles, strollers, wagons, scooters, or battery-powered children’s automobiles at 9 a.m. for the Town’s annual "Parade in the Park" that will take place at 10 a.m.   After the parade, the Applause! Touring troupe will perform “Faces of Freedom” followed by a variety of fun contests for the whole family, such as donut eating.

 

“Everyone is invited to join us for another wonderful Fourth of July celebration,” said Marketing Specialist Leda Isenhour.  “These free events are the perfect opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate our nation’s freedom.”

 

The schedule for the Bond Park events on the Fourth of July is as follows:

 

8-10 a.m.

Fishing Tournament (registration begins at 7:30 a.m. )

9-10 a.m.

Parade preparations (Kiwanis Shelter)

10-10:30 a.m.

Parade in the Park (begin at Kiwanis Shelter)

11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Donut Eating Contest, Lakeside Olympics, Watermelon Eating Contest, Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest, Water Balloon Toss, Hula Hoop Contest (age groups: through age 10, 11-17, and 18+)

   

As the contests draw to an end, everyone will head to Koka Booth Amphitheatre at 3 p.m. to continue the fun, including an ice cream-eating contest, performances by the Cary Town Band and the North Carolina Symphony, and a spectacular fireworks show. The Amphitheatre events are as follows:

 

3-7 p.m.

Family Fun Zone (games and prizes for kids)

4 p.m.

Indy Model Boat Regatta on Symphony Lake

5:30 p.m.

Ice Cream Eating Contest presented by Lumpy's Ice Cream (there will be prizes!)

5:45 p.m.

Cary Town Band concert

7:30 p.m.

North Carolina Symphony Concert

Fireworks to follow concert

 

The Fourth of July celebration will have an early, sweet start for seniors ages 55 and older on Thursday, July 2 at an Ice Cream Social at the Cary Senior Center ballroom at Bond Park, 2-4 p.m.    Co-sponsored by the Town of Cary , Ashworth Drugs and the Rotary Club of Cary, the event will feature free ice cream and patriotic entertainment by the Bond Park day camp children.  Registration has closed.
