TOWN OF CARY MAKES HEADWAY ON CARY PARKWAY REHABILITATION PROJECT

Work begins this week to improve 6.2 miles of main thoroughfare

CARY, NC – As part of its commitment to providing high quality infrastructure and improving motorists’ travel and safety, the Town of Cary is moving forward this week with the Cary Parkway Rehabilitation Project to improve 6.2 miles of Cary Parkway, including a 1.2-mile section of Southeast Cary Parkway from Tryon Road to Holly Springs Road and a 5-mile section of Southwest Cary Parkway from High House Road to Kildaire Farm Road.  As part of the project, the Town is repaving the sections and installing new traffic signal detection devices and thermoplastic pavement markings to further improve travel along the main corridor; the project is expected to be complete in Fall 2009.

During the project, motorists can expect minor delays as crews periodically close lanes beginning Tuesday, March 10, 2009 , until completion of the project.  Work can occur Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. each week.  At least one lane will remain open in each direction at all times.  Electronic message signs will be used during construction to convey timely and accurate information.

“We are committed to doing what it takes to ensure that Cary Parkway is one of the safest and most attractive roadways in the Triangle,” said Engineer Bob Shultes.  “Properly maintaining our streets on a frequent basis allows us to operate our transportation system in a cost-effective manner.”

The Cary Town Council identified the project as a priority in the Town’s Fiscal Year 2009 Capital Budget, and Cary citizens echoed the Council’s sentiments, identifying the project as a primary concern in the 2008 Biennial Survey.  A total of $8.1 million was allocated for this project to improve the two sections of Cary Parkway .  In January 2009, the project was awarded to Rea Constructing of Raleigh at a contract amount of $5.7 million.  N.C. Department of Transportation also maintains sections of the Parkway, most of which is north of High House Road .

More details on the project will be available at www.townofcary.org as construction progresses.
