FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 12, 2009

Chainsaw safety and traffic control device among training topics

CARY, NC – As the temps begin to fall, the Town of Cary’s A-team is “getting their motors running and heading on the highway” during its annual Winter Weather Training and Snow Rodeo on Wednesday, October 14, 2009, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Operations Center for Public Works and Utilities, 400 James Jackson Ave., followed by the snow “rodeo” at the USA Baseball National Training Complex, 200 Brooks Park Lane, from 11 a.m. until noon. As part of the day’s activities, crews will drive fully-equipped Town trucks throughout Cary along assigned routes during simulated wintry weather exercises. Each year, the Town spends a day physically testing its winter weather plans, procedures, equipment, and employee skills in preparation for wintry weather.

To prep for the rodeo, Town crews will begin mounting spreaders and plows and taking inventory of snow and inclement weather equipment today at the Operations Center. Then on Wednesday, October 14, crews will “activate” snow command at the Operations Center and drive snow plows throughout the community. The event will culminate with a competition in a skills exercise “rodeo” at the Baseball Complex, as well as training in chainsaw usage, wintry weather safety driving, plow and spreader techniques and traffic control devices.

“We always look forward to this event as it gives our staff the opportunity to re-familiarize themselves with snow plowing routes, equipment and methods. This annual drill is another illustration of our commitment to providing the highest quality service should inclement weather affect our community,” said Steve Brown, director of the Town of Cary’s Public Works & Utilities department.

The training and snow rodeo are not open to the public.
