FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 25, 2009
Activities planned for all ages at this annual holiday event
CARY, NC – The Town of Cary officially kicks off the holiday season on Saturday, December 5, with the annual Heart of the Holiday Celebration—a full day and night’s worth of activities, celebrations, and merriment in Downtown Cary. In addition to two tree lightings, holiday-seekers of all ages are invited to shop at the festival, tour historic Page-Walker, write to Santa, enjoy a special art show, watch a live performance of “It’s a Wonderful Life” and much more.
The Heart of Cary Association’s Ole Time Winter Festival will be held on the streets of downtown Cary from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Festival-goers can enjoy arts and crafts, entertainment, food and activities. Downtown shops will be open all day. While downtown, drop by Town Hall for a reception from 3-5 p.m. for the Town Employee Art Show; these diverse artworks are sure to surprise and engage your creative side.
Returning to Heart of the Holidays this year is Santa’s Workshop from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Parents are invited to bring children 10 and under to the Herb Young Community Center, 101 Wilkinson Ave., for hands-on crafts, live entertainment and a chance to see a special visitor from the North Pole. Support the Cary Teen Council’s food drive by sending each child with two non-perishable food items. All contributions will be given to a local charity.
Then, pop over to the Page-Walker Arts & History Center for the old-fashioned Victorian Christmas experience at the Page-Walker’s Annual Holiday Open House. Attendees will learn about century-old holiday traditions while touring Cary’s own 1868 historic hotel, sing Christmas carols around the piano, and enjoy holiday refreshments. Historic rooms will be decorated for the season by the Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel. The open house is scheduled from 4-6 p.m.
When near Town Hall starting November 30, drop off a note to Santa. Special arrangements have been made with Santa Claus for the Cary Town Hall to be a drop off site for letters! Letters can be dropped off in the Santa Mailbox before December 10. Each child will hear back from their jolly friend in red! Make sure to include the child’s name and address on each letter.
The official outdoor tree lighting happens at 6 p.m. on the Town Hall Campus. Talented community members will join together onstage to hearken back to the days before television when radio reigned supreme. Performers will recreate that simpler time with the Town’s own Holiday Radio Show culminating in the official lighting of the tree.
Following the performances, attendees can join the Cary Town Council indoors for the unveiling of the Cary Community Tree. For the fourth year in a row, the tree features ornaments created by over 100 local organizations—including schools, churches, businesses, non-profit organizations and clubs—that reflect the intent or purpose of their organization. Refreshments will be offered to honor the Town of Cary’s 2009 Hometown Spirit Award Winner and 2009 Official Tree Lighter!
After the reception and unveiling of the Community Tree, the Town Council Chambers becomes a 1940s radio station again this year for the Cary Players' 'live broadcast' of the holiday classic “It’s A Wonderful Life”. Come see wonderful period costumes, live sound effects, and George, Mary, Potter and the gang as you've maybe not experienced them before! Limited tickets will be available at the door. For information on obtaining advance tickets with special rates for students and seniors, visit www.caryplayers.org.
In case of rain, the tree lighting and the Community Tree presentation will be held in the Town Council Chambers. For a complete schedule of the holiday events and more, see Heart of the Holidays at www.townofcary.org or call (919) 469-4061.
