Cary Teen Council Celebrates 20 Years of Service to Cary and Surrounding Areas

CARY, NC – Since 1989, the Cary Teen Council has offered teens the opportunity to make a difference in their community, and on Tuesday, August 18, Mayor Harold Weinbrecht will recognize their achievements during a 20-Year Celebration in the Cary Town Council Chambers, 316 North Academy St. at 6 p.m. During the event, State Youth Council Coordinator Cynthia Giles and Heather Black, a charter member and director of charitable solicitation licensing for the NC Department of Secretary of State, will also speak. Comprised of more than 400 middle school and high school students from Cary and surrounding areas, the Teen Council provides teens with an avenue for developing leadership qualities as they initiate, organize, supervise and conduct programs and civic projects of all types that benefit the young people of Cary and the surrounding area.

“I am honored to recognize the Teen Council for their dedication to promoting leadership skills among our community’s most promising youths,” said Mayor Harold Weinbrecht. “Through the Teen Council, our young people are working with fellow teens to serve the communities that they live in through volunteerism, and they are actively engaging in the decision making process.”

Each year, teens on the Council volunteer for a variety of programs and events that focus on social/recreational, community awareness/ service, educational, leadership/ teamwork, and fund raising/ recruitment. Typical activities include:

  • Sponsoring Breakfast with the Bunny
  • Volunteering for the Cary Easter Egg Hunt
  • Volunteering for the Cary Road Race
  • Sponsoring Santa’s Workshop and
  • Fund-raising opportunities such as the Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival

The teens have also become involved in the community and volunteer at many elementary schools. Also, they volunteer on a monthly basis at a senior living community in Cary, as well as the Carying Place . Teens also serve on town committees and boards in which they are a voice in making decisions and suggestions for ongoing projects. Cary ’s Teen Council has also received the Most Diverse Award at the State Youth Council Convention.

Teens ages 11-18 interested in joining the Teen Council can mail a completed membership application (accepted in June & December) along with a one-time membership fee of $20.00 (fee includes a Cary Teen Council T-Shirt), payable to Cary Teen Council, to: Cary Teen Council; c/o Cary Parks , Recreation & Cultural Resources Department; P.O.
