Cary Citizens Invited to Participate in Wake County's Affordable Housing Project

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 23, 2009

Cary’s one of three municipalities selected to participate in the pilot

CARY, NC – Town of Cary citizens are invited to participate in a free design workshop as part of the Wake County Affordable Housing Project, on Saturday, October 31, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center, 119 Ambassador Loop. The Wake County Affordable Housing Project is a joint research and design project sponsored by the Wake County Department of Human Services and conducted by graduate students of the School of Architecture at N.C. State University that focuses on the housing needs within Wake County, nationwide and internationally. The Town of Cary is one of three Wake County communities selected to participate in the pilot program that will give Cary residents an opportunity to provide input on the future design of mixed-use, mixed-income and transit-oriented development.

During the workshop, graduate students from the School of Architecture, along with a faculty member, will facilitate a presentation and the design workshop. They will present best practices of affordable housing and explore a range of design models specific to the Town of Cary. Following the pilot, the project outcomes will be documented and provided to the participating towns and Wake County Human Services to assist in their efforts to expand affordable housing opportunities throughout the county.

Wendell and Wake Forest were also chosen to participate in the pilot.

“We’re pleased to partner with Wake County and N.C. State University to provide yet another opportunity for our citizens to engage in a discussion about affordable housing,” said Senior Planner Tracy Stone-Dino. “This project supports our ongoing commitment to providing quality and affordable options to improve our residents’ quality of life.”

In May 2000, The Town of Cary adopted its first Affordable Housing Plan that consisted of various affordable housing tools utilized across the country as well as resources available to expand housing opportunities. In 2008, a county-wide housing assessment was completed by Wake County. The Town has partnered with both public and private developers to incorporate affordable housing for senior citizens and low-income residents. For example, Habitat for Humanity, Downtown Housing Improvement Corporation (DHIC, Inc.), and The Serving Cup are a few of the organizations that have partnered with the Town.

Citizens are also invited to the Town Council’s Work Session on November 17, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers in Cary Town Hall, 316 N. Academy St. As part of the work session, strategies that support affordable housing initiatives in the Town will be discussed.
