CARY TO JOIN IN WORLDWIDE MUSICAL COMMEMORATION OF SEPTEMBER 11TH AT BOND PARK
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 8, 2009
Concert to feature Tai-Yin Choir, Cary’s Town Crier, and local ensembles
CARY, NC – To commemorate the 8th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, the Town of Cary Sister Cities Commission will host the September 11th Concert at Cary’s Sertoma Amphitheatre in Bond Park, 801 High House Road, on Friday, September 11, 2009: the program will also feature a greeting from each of Cary’s four Sister Cities, an appearance by John Webster – Cary’s Town Crier, and performances by the Tai-Yin Choir, Triangle Brass Ensemble and other local talent. Entitled “September 11th Commemoration: A Time of Remembrance and Reflection”, the commemoration is one of more than 100 events being held worldwide by the September Concert Foundation and Sister Cities International.
“Even eight years after that tragic day, the events of September 11 are still felt around the world, and it is only befitting that our community join the nation and world to remember the victims and celebrate their lives,” said Cultural Arts Manager Lyman Collins. “In recognition of this far-reaching event, we’re also looking forward to celebrating the international legacy of the Sister Cities movement.”
Ironically, it was on September 11, 1956, that the Sister Cities movement emerged from a White House Summit on Citizen Diplomacy. At this summit, President Eisenhower called on Americans to practice people-to-people diplomacy in the name of peace. The September Concerts, which began in 2002, are an opportunity to spread a message of hope through music and proclamation while paying tribute to both of these events. This year marks the second year that Cary has participated in the commemoration.
The Town of Cary’s Sister Cities program began in 1992 with Le Touquet, France. Since that time, the Town has built relationships with three additional Sister Cities including: Hsinchu City, Taiwan; Markham, Canada; and County Meath, Ireland.
