CARY, NC – Cary Town Manager Ben Shivar has selected Public Works Director Mike Bajorek to serve as the Town’s Assistant Town Manager beginning July 27, 2009. Bajorek replaces Shivar, who became Town Manager in March after serving as Assistant Town Manager for 13 years.

Bajorek, 50, was the top pick from a pool of 126 applicants from 22 states as far away as California, Texas and Vermont. He joined the Town of Cary in 1988 as Assistant Director of Public Works. He became Cary's Public Works Director in 1996 and served as the interim Public Works and Utilities Director from April 1, 2007 through January 6, 2008.

“In addition to his outstanding skills and abilities, Mike’s strong commitment to Cary and the respect others have for him made him the ideal candidate for the position, and I very much appreciate his willingness to serve the organization and our community in this new and challenging capacity,” said Town Manager Ben Shivar.

In his new role as Assistant Town Manager, Bajorek will focus on day-to-day operations of the organization. He will also be heavily involved in the development and execution of the Town’s operating budget and business plans.

“Being offered this position is a tremendous honor and responsibility, and I’m grateful to have been given the opportunity,” Bajorek said. “I look forward to continuing to work with Town staff to do all that we can to support Ben in implementing the Town Council’s vision for Cary.”

Bajorek is a retired Major in the Air Force Reserves and was deployed to Kuwait during Desert Shield. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Military Institute and a Masters degree in Business Management from Central Michigan University. He is also a graduate of the Municipal and County Administration Course from the School of Government at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Bajorek is an avid runner. Raised in New Providence, NJ, he and his wife, BJ, live in Cary and have four children. They are members of Peace Presbyterian Church where Bajorek has been a Sunday School Teacher for the past 18 years.
