Cary's A-Team Preps for the Possibility of Wintry Weather

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 18, 2008

CARY , NC With weather forecasters calling for the possibility of significant snow accumulation on Saturday, the Town of Cary ’s A-Team began applying a brine solution to all major thoroughfares, bridges, major hills and historically icy spots today.

“We are fully prepared should wintry weather affect our community,” said Town of Cary Public Works Director Mike Bajorek .  “Our priority, should a response be necessary, will be ensuring the major thoroughfares are salted and remain safe.  Also, citizens can contact our customer service representatives if they have questions or concerns.”

Customer service representatives will be staffing the phone lines beginning Saturday morning after 8 a.m. , and all non-emergency calls should be placed to (919) 469-4090.  Citizens are reminded not to call 911 unless there is an emergency posing an immediate threat to life, health, or property.

The Town’s A-Team has 2,000 tons of sand/salt mix supply available, if needed, along with an additional 350 tons of pure salt.  Also, the Town has 57 plows available to clear Cary ’s 350 miles of roads and an additional 100 miles of state-maintained roads in Cary .  In light of the region’s drought conditions, the Town has begun using reclaimed water to produce brine solutions for the roads.

The A-Team clears thoroughfares, primary roads in subdivisions, followed by thru-streets in subdivisions and then cul-de-sacs.  The Town does not clear private parking lots, including those in apartment and condominium complexes or at businesses.

Citizens are also reminded of the following tips during inclement weather:

  • Do not park on streets so that plows and other Town equipment can service the area.

  • Decisions regarding Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources programs are made as follows:

7 a.m.  for programs that begin prior to noon

10 a.m. for programs that begin between noon and 5 p.m.

            3 p.m. for programs that begin after 5 p.m.

Call (919) 469-4061 or the program facility for updates.

  • Be neighborly.  Check on neighbors to make sure that everyone is OK.

  • Stay indoors during severe winter weather. If you do decide to venture out--whether walking or driving--let folks know when and where you are going so that they can contact emergency officials should you fail to reach your destination. Take a cell phone just in case.
