CARY’S A-Team AWAITS FIRST SIGNS OF PRECIPITATION

CARY, NC – With wintry weather beginning to move across western and Central North Carolina, the Town of Cary’s A-Team is geared up for any changing conditions on Cary’s roads.

“Our emergency crews began working at midnight and have completed safety checks in preparation for the wintry weather,” said Town of Cary Public Works Director Mike Bajorek.  “Right now, we’re just waiting on any precipitation and are ready to respond promptly should road conditions deteriorate.”

Town crews spent Tuesday and Wednesday applying a brine solution made from reclaimed water to major thoroughfares and on bridges, major hills and historically icy spots.

The Town’s A-Team has 2,000 tons of sand/salt mix supply available, if needed, along with an additional 350 tons of pure salt.  Also, the Town has 57 plows available to clear Cary’s 450 miles of roads – which includes 100 miles of state-maintained roads.

When plowing is necessary, the A-Team clears thoroughfares, primary roads in subdivisions, followed by thru-streets in subdivisions and then cul-de-sacs.  The Town does not clear private parking lots, including those in apartment and condominium complexes or at businesses.

Currently, the Town plans to collect garbage as regularly scheduled on Thursday.  Should wintry weather impact the area, the Town will announce any changes to the collection schedule via news releases and www.townofcary.org; citizens can also call (919) 469-4090 for updates.

Citizens are also reminded of the following tips during inclement weather:

  • Do not call 911 unless there is an emergency posing an immediate threat to life, health, or property.  All non-emergency snow calls should be placed to (919) 469-4090; customer service representatives will be staffing the phones during regular business hours, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.; recorded messages will be available during other times.  Complete wintry weather information is also available on the Town’s Web site, www.townofcary.org

  • Decisions about canceling parks, recreation, and cultural programs are generally made by around 3 p.m. and 7 a.m.  Call (919) 469-4061 for updates.

  • C-Tran door-to-door service follows the Wake County Public Schools System inclement weather schedule.  A determination about any changes to the fixed route service will be made if/as weather conditions change.  For updates, call C-Tran at (919) 481-2020.

  • View Cary road conditions by watching wink on Cary TV 11 at rush hours and around the clock during inclement weather.

  • Be neighborly.  Check on neighbors to make sure that everyone is OK.

  • Stay indoors during severe winter weather. If you do decide to venture out--whether walking or driving--let folks know when and where you are going so that they can contact emergency officials should you fail to reach your destination. Take a cell phone just in case.

  • While Town Hall offices almost always remain open during inclement weather, it’s a good idea to call before venturing out to ensure that no changes have been made to workday schedules or service availability.

CARY ’S A-Team prepares FOR POSSIBILITY OF WINTRY WEATHER

Town uses reclaimed water to make brine solution

CARY , NC With weather forecasters calling for the possibility of a wintry mix Thursday morning, the Town of Cary ’s A-Team began applying a brine solution to all bridges, major hills and historically icy spots today.

“We are fully prepared should wintry weather affect our community,” said Town of Cary Public Works Director Mike Bajorek .  “Our priority, should a response be necessary, will be ensuring the major thoroughfares are salted and remain safe.”

In light of the region’s drought conditions, the Town coordinated with state officials to use reclaimed water to produce the brine solutions for the roads.  The reclaimed water does not alter the effectiveness of the brine.

“We’re pleased to be able to use reclaimed water as an innovative alternative that will help keep our roads safe, while also helping to preserve our drinking water supply,” added Bajorek.

The Town’s A-Team has 2,000 tons of sand/salt mix supply available, if needed, along with an additional 350 tons of pure salt.  Also, the Town has 57 plows available to clear Cary ’s 350 miles of roads and an additional 100 miles of state-maintained roads in Cary
