Cary to Host Day of Music as Part of Worldwide September 11 Commemoration

Four programs throughout Town to highlight messages of remembrance and hope

September 8, 2008

CARY, NC
To commemorate the 7th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, the Town of Cary Sister Cities Commission will host four musical programs throughout Cary on Thursday, September 11, 2008 :  each program will also feature a greeting from Cary ’s Sister Cities and a performance by a local high shool ensemble.  Entitled “September 11th Commemoration: A Time of Remembrance and Reflection”, the commemoration is one of more than 80 events being held worldwide by the September Concert Foundation and Sister Cities International.  The event also marks the first time that Cary is participating.

Members of the Town of Cary Sister Cities Commission and Association, Cary Town Council, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Daughters of the American Revolution, and other patriotic civic organizations are expected to participate in the programs that will take place as follows:

  • Noon – Town Hall Plaza,
    316 North Academy St.
featuring dramatic readings by Cary High School students

“The events of September 11 are still felt around the world, and it is only befitting that our community join our nation and world to remember the victims and celebrate their lives,” said Cultural Arts Director Lyman Collins.  “We’re also looking forward to celebrating the international legacy of the Sister Cities movement.”

Ironically, it was on September 11, 1956, that the Sister Cities movement emerged from a White House Summit on Citizen Diplomacy.  At this summit, President Eisenhower called on Americans to practice people-to-people diplomacy in the name of peace.  The September Concerts, which began in 2002, are an opportunity to spread a message of hope through music and proclamation as we pay tribute to both of these events.

The Town of Cary ’s Sister Cities program began in 1992 with Le Touquet , France .   Since that time, the Town has built relationships with three additional Sister Cities including:  Hsinchu City , Taiwan ; Markham , Canada ; and County Meath , Ireland .  For more information, visit the Sister Cities Commission at www.townofcary.org.
