Cary Town Band to perform as part of Fall Sertoma Series

September 23, 2008

CARY
, NC
Make the most of fall and head over to the Sertoma Amphitheatre at Cary ’s Bond Park, 801 High House Road , for a free concert by the Cary Town Band on Friday, September 26, 2008 , at 7:30 p.m.  The concert is part of the Town’s Annual Fall Sertoma Series that features the best in free, live, outdoor entertainment.

Founded and directed by Dr. James R. Hammerle, the band is reminiscent of the turn-of-the-century bands led by Sousa, Goldman and others who popularized band concerts all over America . The band plays American and foreign marches, circus music, overtures and other "pops" classical music, polkas, and waltzes.  The band is comprised of more than 30 musicians from Cary , Raleigh , Apex, and surrounding areas, almost all of whom are professionals in some line of work other than music.  Band members range from high school students to retirees in their eighties.

“Come out and listen to the beautiful music of one of Cary ’s most renowned performance ensembles in the serene setting of Bond Park,” said Performing Arts Coordinator Sarah Bunch.

The Cary Town Band was first founded in the fall of 1987, following a decision by the Cary Town Council to provide support for the group.  About 14 volunteers showed up for the first rehearsal in October 1987.  By February 1988, the band had 19 members and performed their first official concert.  Over the years, the band has increased in size, averaging 33 members each year, and their musical repertoire comprises more than 400 pieces.  Each year, the band performs nearly 10 times in the local area.

Music lovers are also invited to the remaining performances in the Fall Sertoma Series, including Opera Carolina presents Little Red’s Most Unusual Day on Saturday, October 4 at 3 p.m.    Also, the Great Big Gone concert that was postponed because of Tropical Storm Hanna has been rescheduled for Sunday, October 5 at 3 p.m.
