CITIZENS ENCOURAGED TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS FOLLOWING STRING OF VEHICLE LARCENIES IN CARY

CARY , NC Following a series of unsolved larcenies that occurred between July 3, 2008 and July 4, 2008 , the Town of Cary Police Department reminds citizens to do their part to reduce the possibility of becoming a property crime victim.  Between 10 p.m. on July 3 and 6 a.m. on July 4, 13 cars were broken into in the area of East Park Street ( Hudson Court , Holtz Lane , and Sloan Drive ).   Entry to the vehicles was gained through unlocked doors and by force on locked vehicles when property was visible.  Victims reported that cash and GPS units were taken from the vehicles.

“While Cary remains one of the safest large communities in the nation, we are not immune to crime,” explained Captain Mike Williams.  “Simple steps such as locking one’s vehicle and storing valuables out of plain sight go a long way in reducing the possibility of being a property crime victim.”

The Town of Cary Police Department offers the following crime prevention tips:

  • Keep doors closed and locked, including your garage doors and car doors inside garages; remember an open door is an invitation.

  • Never leave valuables or cash in your car. If you must leave items in the car, lock them in the trunk and be sure to remove mounting devices, too, since they are a sign to thieves that GPS units and other electronics may be hidden inside.

  • If you have folding rear seats, make sure they are locked.

  • Park in well-lighted areas if you cannot park in a garage.

  • Be a good neighbor and alert police to any unusual activity in your neighborhood.

Crime Stoppers will pay up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest or indictment of those responsible for committing certain types of crimes.  If you have information concerning a crime, contact Crime Stoppers at 226-CRIM(E); you may also visit www.carycrimestoppers.net.  All calls to Crime Stoppers are kept in complete confidence.
