Six East Coast Artists Awarded the Jerry Miller Award as Part of Cary's 2008 Lazy Daze Festival

Annual award honors the best of the best among 354 artists

CARY, NC – The Town of Cary is pleased to announce the winners of the 2008 Jerry Miller Artist Award – an honor that recognizes the “Best of Show” among artworks/crafts displayed at the Town of Cary’s Annual Lazy Daze Arts & Crafts Festival that attracts more than 60,000 people each year.  The following individuals were selected from among 354 artists for top honors in the six categories:

 

  • Shandi Berls – Clay artist, Wilmington , NC

  • Barbara Berman – Fiber artist, Sanford , NC

  • John Furches – Graphics Artist, Elkin , NC

  • Tim Garvin -- Jewelry Artist, Durham , NC

  • Sydney Jeffrey – Jewelry Artist, Richmond , VA

  • Liz Williams – Mixed Media Artist, Atlanta , GA

 

“We applaud these individuals for their outstanding contribution to yet another successful Lazy Daze Festival,” said Town of Cary Festivals Coordinator Joy Ennis . “We encourage both local and nationwide artists to share their talents in this award-winning festival each year.”

 

A panel of five judges consisting of working artists, arts educators, Festival Committee members and professionals in the arts field chose winners on the following criteria:  craftsmanship and technical skill; attention to detail; consistency of style; apparent and well developed intention or concept; innovative, creative, divergent thinking; unity of concept; apparent understanding of aesthetics in work; balance of compositional elements; and appropriate material choice for concept.

 

Shandi Berls makes functional and decorative pottery using stoneware clays. She often incorporates copper, tile and wire into her pieces. Along with inlaying tiles on pots, she works with wood to create simple frames that border a tile design or a frame that becomes part of the pieces by inlaying the tile in the wood.  Berls can be contacted at (910) 313-0502 or at sberls@bellsouth.net.

 

Barbara Berman’s creations include scarves, wraps and all sorts of carry-bags. Ms. Berman’s artistry is manifested by my use of fabrics.  Velours, silks, upholstery fabrics, beads and fancy fringes all combine for a dazzling display of colors, and textures. John Furches is best known for his ability to depict the relationships of color and nature in rural landscapes and nostalgic still life's. He enjoys painting the things around him--found objects, antiques, architectural subjects, and landscapes.

 

Tim Garvin, an MFA trained artist with over 35 years experience in ceramics, looks at the world in detail, noticing intricacies, contrasts, and rhythms of color to find and elaborate design. He then creates jewelry using numerous ceramic techniques, among which are slip trailing, air brushing, and stenciling. Garvin may be reached at (800) 549-5269 or at info@bluebusstudio.com.

 

Sydney Jeffrey enjoys experimenting with different techniques, combining metals, introducing abstract design elements, and using line to draw the eye around and through the piece.  She may be contacted at info@lakepointdesigns.com.

 

Liz Williams has been working as a full time artist for 10 years but has been winning awards for her art for 30 years.  Born in Williamsburg , Virginia and a graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University , Liz now makes her home in Atlanta , Georgia .  She enjoys working in photography, clay and paints.

 

In 2001 to commemorate the 25th annual festival, the Lazy Daze Committee instituted the Lazy Daze Invitation Awards, now named the Jerry Miller Artist Awards, to honor the Lazy Daze festival’s founding father, local artist Jerry Miller.
