Kids to Kick Off National Fire Prevention Week with Safety Day at Cary's Bond Park

2008 campaign focuses on preventing home fires

October 1, 2008

CARY, NC – For the first time, the Town of Cary is hosting Safety Day at Bond Park, 801 High House Road, on Saturday, October 4 to help jump start National Fire Prevention Week that runs October 5-11; this year’s theme is “It’s Fire Prevention Week: Prevent Home Fires!”  From 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, Cary Fire and Police, Cary EMS, and Wake Co. Safe Kids Staff will provide games and educational activities in the open field across from the Bond Park Community Center to help educate children and their parents about the dangers of home fires.

As part of Safety Day, kids are invited to compete in the Kid’s Combat Challenge that begins at 11 a.m. ; children will run through a seven-obstacle course for an official time competing in their respective age group.  Also, kids can catch the new fire engine train ride that will run throughout the day.  Between activities, kids and parents can visit the Public Education Trailer and get a close-up view of fire apparatus and equipment.  Fire officials will also be providing child passenger seat safety tips, first aid tips and KID's ID registration.

“Bring the entire family out for this fun opportunity to learn fire safety tips that could help save lives,” said Kathy Ellis, Cary ’s senior fire education specialist.  “With a little extra precaution, you can help prevent the leading causes of home fires – cooking, heating, electrical and smoking materials.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fire departments responded to more than 400,000 home fires across the nation in 2006.  While most people consider their homes safe havens, danger still exists if homes are not checked regularly for fire hazards.

Cary fire officials will continue education efforts throughout National Fire Prevention Week with stops at area elementary schools to speak to students in grades kindergarten through 1st grade.  Also as part of the program, students will watch a fire safety puppet show and see a firefighter put on fire fighting gear.
