BROWN TO HEAD CARY PUBLIC WORKS & UTILITIES DEPARTMENT

CARY , NC – Following a national search, Cary Town Manager Bill Coleman has selected Stephen J. Brown to serve as the Town of Cary ’s Director for Public Works & Utilities (PWUT).  Brown, 44, has been with the Town of Cary Engineering Department since June 9, 1997 , most recently serving as the Associate Director of Engineering.  He takes the helm of the combined Public Works and Utilities department from Public Works Director Mike Bajorek on January 7, 2008 .  Bajorek has been the Interim Public Works & Utilities Director since April 1 following the retirement of R. Kim Fisher after more than 22 years of service with the Town.

“Steve brings a wealth of private and public experience to the Public Works and Utilities Director's position; he is highly respected in his field and in this organization, and I have complete confidence in his future success,” said Town Manager Bill Coleman.  “Over the years, Steve has demonstrated his ability to apply his experience and his extensive knowledge of utilities to planning and problem solving in the Engineering Department, and I’m looking forward to working with him to bring that same talent and hard work to the public works and utilities challenges that face the Town of Cary over the next 20 years.”

With more than 20 years of professional engineering experience in the public and private sectors, Steve Brown holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from NC State University, and he is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in North Carolina and Virginia .  He is also a graduate of the UNC School of Government’s Municipal and County Administration program.

Brown is a co-recipient of the Associated General Contractors Carolinas Pinnacle Award for his work as part of the team to help expand the Town’s water treatment plant, and he is also a two-time Town of Cary Employee of the Year nominee.  His professional associations include the American Waterworks Association, the Water Environment Federation, and the North Carolina Water Resources Association. Over his career, he has authored numerous technical papers and made presentations at conferences throughout the nation.
