EXCESSIVE RAINS LEAD TO SEWER OVERFLOW

CARY, NC – As a result of heavy rains, a surcharging manhole at the Walnut Creek Pump Station, 1100 Buck Jones Road resulted in an approximately 7,000-gallon spill on Saturday, October 27, 2007 at 1:30 a.m.   The untreated waste reached a Walnut Creek tributary to Lake Johnson; no fish-kill was observed.  The heavy rains prevented clean-up efforts, and the rain event naturally flushed the area.

The Clean Water Act requires public notice in the form of a news release issued by public works operators within 48 hours of the detection of a wastewater overflow of 1,000 gallons or greater that also reaches surface waters.  Paid advertisements are also necessary for spills in excess of 14,999 gallons.
