RUNNERS GEAR UP FOR THE CARY ROAD RACE THIS WEEKEND

Advance registration available at Cary Towne Center today

 

CARY , NC Running aficionados are lacing up their shoes in preparation for the Cary Road Race on Saturday, April 14 at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre, 8003 Regency Parkway;  the races begin at 8:30 a.m. with the 10K , followed by the 5K at 9:45 a.m. and the 1 mile Fun Run at 10:30 a.m.   The race is held each year to promote fitness and foster the sense of community within Cary .

 

Advance registration will be available today at Cary Towne Center , 1105 Walnut St. , from 4-8 p.m. , near the food court.  Race day registration will be held at the VIP section of the Amphitheatre beginning at 7 a.m.  Runners can register in two divisions – recreational for $8 (advance) and $10 (race day) and competitive for $11 (advance) and $15 (race day).  Only competitive division runners will be eligible for awards and have official times recorded and published.  The Fun Run is free, but registration is required.  Official race t-shirts are available for $5 each.

 

“Runners and walkers of every age and level are invited to participate in this annual event,” said Assistant Athletics Program Supervisor Kirk Matthews.  This year’s race also features an opportunity for baby joggers to participate.

 

The recreational classification includes runners with baby joggers in both the 5K and the 10K events. The passenger must be secured in the stroller and wearing a safety helmet. All strollers require a minimum 14-inch diameter wheel and must be a heavy-duty stroller designed for racing. All strollers must pass a safety inspection before being allowed on the course.

 

Awards will be given in the following categories: overall male and female winners in each race; top three males and females in each division (overall male and female winners are not eligible for divisional awards); the youngest and oldest runners; and all Fun Run participants will receive ribbons.

 

Proceeds for the Cary Road Race are earmarked annually for local youth and fitness projects. Past projects include Cary High School track resurfacing and contributions to Kids Together playground and Triangle Area Special Olympics athletes. This year’s proceeds will be used to enhance existing greenways and trails in Cary . There Town currently boasts 26 miles of greenways and trails in the Cary area, with many linking to state and county trails.
