TOWN OF CARY ’S SERVING UP JACK DANIEL’S

SILVER CORNET BAND FOR MARVELOUS MUSIC OPENER

Cary Town Band to open up for the concert & kickoff the 2007-2008 season

CARY , NC – Two of the most talented bands on the east coast will take center stage in Cary this Saturday, November 10, to open Cary’s 8th Annual Marvelous Music Concert Series;  beginning at 7:30 p.m., the Cary Town Band will open up for the main act – Mr. Jack Daniel’s Original Silver Cornet Band – at the Herbert C. Young Community Center, 101 Wilkinson Ave.  Tickets to see the bands are now on sale for $18 (adults), $16 (seniors 55 and older), and $15 (12 and under) at the Community Center or at Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com or (919) 834-4000.

Beginning in the early 1900s, 13 Lynchburg , VA residents made up Mr. Jack Daniel's Original Silver Cornet Band and for nearly 20 years they were famous in the area. Gradually, progress came to Lynchburg and the urbanization of America came with it.  As other forms of entertainment came into being, the small town band phenomenon dwindled and finally all but disappeared.  It would be early 80 years later that musician, actor and historian Dave Fulmer would recreate the form of musical Americana that no longer existed.

A spin-off of the first Silver Cornet Band, Mr. Jack Daniel's Original Silver Cornet Band brings vividly to life the sights and sounds of a vanished era in American musical history via a 12-piece band of professional musicians dedicated to playing the music of the small town bands of over half a century ago.

“Everyone is invited to come out in and around Cary to come out and help us kick off what will be another great Marvelous Music Series,” said Performing Arts Coordinator Sarah Bunch.  “This is also a great opportunity to catch Cary ’s own version of the turn-of-the-century small town band.”

The Cary Town Band, directed by Dr. James R. Hammerle, is reminiscent of the turn of the century bands led by Sousa, Goldman and others who popularized band concerts all over America . Now in its twentieth year of existence, the band plays American and foreign marches, circus music, overtures and other "pops" classical music, polkas, and waltzes.

This season’s Marvelous Music Series continues into 2008 with Chestnut Brass, Sun., Dec. 9; MLK, Jr. Dreamfest Celebration featuring Bettye Lavette, Sat., Jan. 12, 2008 ; and QuinTango, Fri., April 11, 2008 .   Season tickets are available through Sunday, December 9 by requesting an order form at
(919) 462-3969; prices are $52 (4-concert package) and $45 (3-concert package).
