CARY ANNOUNCES COLLECTION SCHEDULE FOR STORM DEBRIS

Citizens may continue to report storm-related debris through next week

CARY , NC To ensure that fallen tree debris from this week’s wind storm is collected throughout Cary, the Town has extended the period of time for residents to report storm-related tree damage through Friday, April 27; Town crews will begin collecting tree debris on Monday, April 30.  All Cary citizens with downed trees in their yard should call the Town at 469-4090 by 5 p.m. on April 27 to report the size and number of downed trees, and residents should place the debris curbside by April 30.  Reports can also be e-mailed to brenda.mann@townofcary.org and should include the physical address and telephone number.

“We are continuing to receive reports of trees debris resulting from this week’s storm, and by extending the length of time for reports, our crews will be able to handle the collection more efficiently,” said Interim Public Works and Utilities Director Mike Bajorek.  “Once all of the reports are received, we will continue the special collection daily until all reported debris is collected.”  Bajorek added that the special tree collection is separate from the normal yard waste collection.

Since Monday’s storm, more than 50 downed trees have been cut and dragged from public streets and sidewalks and countless more have fallen at private homes and businesses.

Traffic shifts remain in place on westbound Tryon Road until the storm-related sinkhole is repaired. Also, Coatbridge Trail at Annie Jones Park remains closed in order to complete repairs resulting from storm damage.

CARY CONTINUES TO ASSESS DAMAGE FROM YESTERDAY’S HIGH WINDS

Debris collection schedule to be announced on Thursday

CARY, NC –With only two additional trees falling in public areas overnight, Town of Cary crews has spent the day inspecting parks, visiting public facilities, driving the streets, and walking greenways to collect data on damage and debris and to ensure that all areas are safe for citizens; thus, the Town has temporarily closed Coatbridge Trail at Annie Jones Park and the Franklin Field at Lions Park to make repairs resulting from storm damage.  With more than 50 downed trees having been cut and dragged from public streets and sidewalks and countless more having fallen at private homes and businesses, Public Works staff are putting the final touches on a special debris collection schedule, which they plan to announce on Thursday.

All Cary Citizens with downed trees in their yard should call the Town at 469-4090 by the end of business on Wednesday, April 18 to report the size and number of downed trees and when the citizen will be able to get them to the curb for collection so that the Town can use this information to estimate the time and resources necessary to complete clean-up.  Reports can also be e-mailed to brenda.mann@townofcary.org.

“While much of the storm debris will be able to be prepared by citizens and collected by the Town as regular yard waste, we realize that some folks may have whole trees that fell that they’ll need help disposing of,” said Interim Public Works and Utilities Director Mike Bajorek.  “While the special collection schedule we plan to announce on Thursday will give citizens plenty of time to get their storm debris to the curb, we encourage everyone to move as quickly as possible.”

Traffic shifts will remain in place on westbound Tryon Road until the storm-related sinkhole that developed last night is repaired.

The next news release update will be issued on Thursday, April 19, 2007 .

All Town greenways and trails are closed and will remain so until each can be inspected for safety and cleared of any debris.

While there were no wind-related traffic accidents reported in Cary today, trees did strike two homes—one on Madison Avenue and one on Ellen Drive ; no one was hurt.

Officials continue to remind motorists to treat non-working signalized intersections as four-way stops and to report traffic signal outages and downed trees on Cary streets and sidewalks to the Town of Cary at 469-4090.  Please report power outages to your individual electricity provider, not to the Town of Cary .  And only call 911 if experiencing or witnessing an immediate threat to life or property.

WINDS CAUSING TREES TO FALL AND POWER TO FAIL IN CARY

CARY, NC – More than 50 Town of Cary A-Team Storm Fighters are working hard to keep one of America’s best places to live running smoothly as today’s high winds blow down trees and blow out the lights at intersections throughout this community of nearly 120,000.  More than 35 trees have been reported down on public streets and sidewalks since 9 a.m. , and five signalized intersections along Davis Drive are dark; the traffic signals at Cary Parkway and High Meadow Drive are on flash.  Fortunately, there have been no reports of traffic accidents.

“Having chainsaw crews pre-positioned throughout town has helped us respond quickly to falling trees,” said Interim Public Works and Utilities Director Mike Bajorek.  “Our focus is on keeping transportation routes open and keeping our citizens and our employees safe.”

Motorists are reminded to treat non-working signalized intersections as four-way stops; approach intersections slowly and with caution, being sure to come to a full and complete stop before proceeding.

Please report traffic signal outages and downed trees on Cary streets and sidewalks to the Town of Cary at (919) 469-4090.  Remember:  trees may be tangled in live power lines, so do not attempt to move them on your own.

Please report power outages to your individual electricity provider.

Please do not call 911 unless you are experiencing an immediate threat to life or property.

The next update will be issued around 3 p.m. unless changing conditions warrant earlier action.
