TOWN OF CARY OPENS ALL LANES of high house road widening project

Opening marks the substantial completion of the $9.3-million widening project

CARY, NC – Drivers in Northwest Cary have room to spare now that the Town of Cary opened all lanes of the $9.3 million High House Road Widening Project over the weekend; the opening marks the substantial completion of the project that included widening High House Road from a two-lane, one-way section to a four-lane median divided road from N.C. 55 to east of Carpenter Upchurch Road and other upgrades to improve travel in western Cary.

In addition to the road widening, the two-lane bridge just north of Carpenter-Upchurch Road was replaced with a new, six-lane bridge that includes a sidewalk and decorative concrete railing on both sides.  New curb and gutter and sidewalks were installed along the section, along with reconfigured approaches to High House Road from Jenks Carpenter Road and Carpenter Upchurch Road .  An updated traffic signal was also installed at the Carpenter Upchurch Road and High House Road intersection.

“The near completion of this project marks a new era for mobility in northwestern Cary ,” said Senior Engineer Tom Ellis.  “Business, school and residential motorists will appreciate the ease of navigation that the new lanes will offer.  In addition, bicyclists can enjoy the widened, outer lanes that were installed as part of the project.”  The outer lanes were widened to include an additional two feet on each side to accommodate bicyclists.

While the project is substantially complete, motorists may notice intermittent lane closures in order to finish minor work along the project, including installation of new, improved street lights. The project is expected to be entirely complete by July 2007.

The Town began widening the .9-mile segment of High House Road from N.C. 55 to just east of Carpenter Upchurch Road in November 2005 as part of an effort to improve traffic flow in western Cary .  C.C. Mangum Company of Raleigh was contracted to complete the work.
