TOWN
OF
CARY
OPENS ALL LANES
of N.C. 54/Chapel Hill road widening project
Opening
marks substantial completion of $5.9 million widening project
CARY
,
NC
– Drivers and cyclists in
Eastern
Cary
have begun enjoying a smoother ride to work, home and school since the Town
opened all lanes of the $5.9 million N.C. 54/Chapel Hill Road Widening Project
during Memorial Day weekend. The
opening marks the substantial completion of the project that included widening
Chapel Hill
Road
from a
two-lane section to a four-lane median divided road with 4-foot
wide, striped bicycle lanes from
Trinity Road
to
Reedy Creek
Road
along with
other upgrades to improve travel along this corridor.
Dual left turn lanes were
also added on
Northeast Maynard Road
at
Chapel Hill Road
. New
curb and gutter and sidewalks were installed along the entire section.
Also, an updated traffic signal was installed at the
Chapel Hill Road
and
Northeast Maynard Road
intersection.
“We
are pleased to announce substantial completion of the widening project along
this popular
Cary
route,” said Senior Engineer Russ
Overton. “Motorists will
appreciate the convenient additional lanes that are expected to help relieve
traffic congestion for those needing to travel through Town or access I-40. This
project is just one of the ways we are continuously improving the quality of
life for our citizens.”
While
the project is substantially complete, motorists may notice intermittent lane
closures in order to finish minor punch-list items.
The entire project should be complete by July 2007.
The
Town began widening the 1-mile segment of
Chapel Hill Road
from
Trinity Road
to
Reedy Creek Road
in September 2005 as part of an effort
to improve traffic flow in eastern
Cary
. REA
Contracting of Raleigh was contracted to complete the work.
This
is the second State owned and maintained roadway that the Town of
Cary
has improved and opened this month,
the other being a portion of High
House Road.
