CARY TOWN BAND TO CELEBRATE 20TH ANNIVERSARY WITH CONCERT AT THE PARK

CARY , NC The Cary Town Band is preparing for a giant birthday party complete with awards, proclamation, guests and music, of course; the 20th Anniversary celebration will be held on Saturday, November 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cary Senior Center in Bond Park, 801 High House Road .  As part of the event, Mayor Pro Tem Jack Smith will present a proclamation in honor of the band and join the Cary community in celebrating the band’s 20 years of performance.

Founded and directed by Dr. James R. Hammerle, the band is reminiscent of the turn of the century bands led by Sousa, Goldman and others who popularized band concerts all over America . The band plays American and foreign marches, circus music, classical music, polkas, and waltzes.

“Mark your calendars to attend this very memorable occasion that features some of the Triangle’s most talented performers,” said Performing Arts Coordinator Sarah Bunch.

Bunch noted that the band is comprised of more than 30 musicians from Cary , Raleigh , Apex, and surrounding areas, almost all of whom are professionals in some line of work other than music.  Band members range from high school students to retirees in their eighties.

“We’re also looking forward to presenting awards to nine of the band members who have been in the band since the first year,” added Bunch.  “Guests are also invited to peruse the antique drum collection and memorabilia that will be on display at the concert.”

The Cary Town Band was first founded in the fall of 1987, following a decision by the Cary Town Council to provide support for the group.  About 14 volunteers showed up for the first rehearsal in October 1987.  By February 1988, the band had 19 members and performed their first official concert.  Over the years, the band has increased in size, averaging 33 members each year and their musical repertoire comprises more than 400 pieces.  Each year, the band performs nearly 10 times in the local area.
